Mark Matthews is an Australian big-wave surfer who was severely wounded in a horrific encounter with a shallow reef in 2016. Forthwith the ferocious wipeout, the surfer ended up with broken ligaments, an injured shin, and a tear in an artery. However, after undergoing surgery and spending time recovering in rehab, Mark’s love and devotion for his beloved sport gave him another chance to paddle his way through the ocean. In fact, couple of years back, the Australian openned up about his injuries.

In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, the 39-year-old profoundly chatted about his painful episode with the reef. He also opened up about his take on fear and “the feelings that make you want to run.” Mark even praised his injuries by stating, “That’s the silver lining in being injured”, as his harrowing accident gave him the chance to deliver keynote talks to some major organizations.

Furthermore, Mark revealed the doctors’ perspective on his fatal wounds. As per the surfer, “the doctors were all freaked out”. They even asserted that the surfer would likely suffer from depression and would lose the adrenaline rush he was acquainted with.  However, Matthews refused to give up and fought back with all his might. Elaborating on his positive outlook, he said, “ for me, public speaking is scarier than surfing. I get as much adrenaline from that”.

Interestingly, because of his nerve damage and an inability to lift his right foot, the Australian initially had to paddle with the help of a brace. “My ankle at the moment is like standing on a wobble board but it will come back”, added Mark. But now, he is completely able to perform his surfing prompts without any assistance.
